The Ernst Leitz Wetzlar 4498 Antique Apochromat Microscope Objective 4mm comes with several notable aspects, both positive and negative, which are crucial to consider before making a purchase.

Pros:

1. High Quality: The Ernst Leitz Wetzlar brand is renowned for its superior optics, and this antique apochromat objective is no exception. It offers exceptional image quality, boasting a high resolution and contrast.

2. Rare and Collectible: As an antique, this objective is a unique piece that adds a touch of history and charm to any microscope collection.

3. Durable: Leitz microscope objectives are built to last, ensuring that this objective can serve you well for many years to come.

Cons:

1. Age and Maintenance: Being an antique, this objective may require more maintenance than newer models. It could potentially have issues such as lens degradation or mechanical malfunctions.

2. Compatibility: Not all modern microscopes are compatible with antique objectives. You must ensure that the objective will work seamlessly with your microscope before purchasing.

3. Expensive: Given its rarity and quality, this objective is typically more expensive than newer, standard objectives.

In conclusion, the Ernst Leitz Wetzlar 4498 Antique Apochromat Microscope Objective 4mm is an excellent choice for those who value high-quality optics, appreciate the charm of antiques, and have a microscope that is compatible with this objective. However, potential buyers should be prepared to invest in maintenance and should carefully consider their specific needs and budget before making a purchase.

If you are a serious collector, a professional, or someone who values the history and craftsmanship behind this objective, it could be a worthwhile investment. For those just starting out or on a tight budget, it might be more practical to consider a modern, standard objective that is more affordable and easier to maintain.

Please refer to the photos for condition of this lens, and its brass protective case. The length of the lens, top to bottom, is approximately 42mm long. Polished brass. Original brass protective case.

Brass case in beautiful condition, as is the lens itself. Typical of these antique lenses, no other markings are present to indicate magnification power or numerical aperture, but I strongly suspect this lens has a aperture approximately 0.95 and between 40 45X. Lenses are clean and clear. I have personally mounted and tested this lens on my own equipment, the images it provides are crisp, clear, highly resolved.

The lens is marked 4mm. Correction collar turns easily and smoothly. Correction collar for cover glass thickness correction. Brass lens barrel engraved 4498.

Standard R.M.S. What a beautiful lens. Mounting threads. Made in Germany.
